- Product Identifier – When you take a supply of a chemical out of its large container from the manufacturer and move it into a smaller container for everyday use, you will need to label the smaller vessel—it’s an OSHA requirement. The first piece of information you will need to include on the new chemical label is a product identifier, or a unique name or code which allows you and your team to recognize the chemical.
- Hazard Pictogram – All chemical labels also require hazard pictograms. These symbols are designed to communicate the various hazards the chemical might pose. All hazard pictograms are printed in black ink on a white background, with the whole symbol enclosed in a red diamond shape for ease of identification and recognition.
- Signal Word – Chemical labels also use signal words to alert users to hazards. Severely hazardous chemicals are labelled with the word DANGER, while less severe hazards use WARNING instead.
- Precautionary Statements – Your chemical labels must also include precautionary statements, which are practical instructions for the safe storage, handling, and disposal of the chemical.
